You love to share essential oils with your family, so it makes sense that you want to share them with your pets as well! Before you begin using essential oils for pets, you need to know the answers to some important questions: Can you use essential oils on dogs, cats, and other pets the same way you use them on yourself? How much should you use? What is the best way to administer oils for topical use?

It is important to note that animals cannot tell us if something is working or not, so we must exercise due caution and approach using oils on animals safely and responsibly. Not all essential oils are created equal. Make sure you are getting good information from qualified people who have used our Young Living oils with their animals successfully – this may or may not be an animal health professional.

Please note that these are general recommendations for use. Please refer to a Veterinarian that is skilled and trained in the use of essential oils for the best route to go with your animal. If your pet is pregnant, nursing, or has a medical condition, consult a veterinarian with experience with essential oils before use.
Basic Guidelines
There are some general tips and suggestions you’ll want to keep in mind as you share essential oils with your furry friends.

  • Animals are generally more sensitive to essential oils than humans are. It’s best to heavily dilute essential oils and use them in moderation.
  • Use extreme caution when using essential oils on and around cats or dogs under 8 weeks old because they are developing at fast rates; it is easy to mess up the proper dilution for each breed and size.
  • Every animal is different, so carefully observe how your animal responds to essential oils. Use common sense and good judgment as you try different methods.
  • Be especially careful not to get essential oils in an animal’s eyes.
  • If diffusing, always allow cats or dogs access to areas where they can avoid the diffused oil.
  • Use special caution with cats and essential oils. Consult a veterinarian with essential oil experience before using around them.
Essential Oil Acclimation
Your pets may need some time to adjust to the new scents and sensations of essential oils. Use these tips to introduce your pets to essential oils easily and comfortably.

  • Wear essential oils throughout the day, so your pets will be exposed to the aroma as you hold them, play, or cuddle on the couch.
  • Diffuse essential oils in spaces where your pets like to relax. A safe introduction to pets often starts with diffusing in their area (1-2 drops in a water-based diffuser) with an exit option. This gives a very LOW concentration into the air space and is a good place to start. Closely watch for signs of irritation — such as whining, sniffing, nervousness, and excessive scratching — while diffusing around them.
  • Apply an essential oil to your hands and let your pets smell them so that they can explore the scent on their terms.
  • If your pets are jittery or resistant to essential oils, don’t try to force your pets to stay around you and the area you are diffusing essential oils. Our pet’s sense of smell is very heightened compared to ours as humans. Small amounts over time will help our animals ease into being around essential oils.
Dilution for Topical Application
Your animal’s size affects the amount of oil you should use and how much you should dilute for topical application.

  • For cats, small dogs, and other smaller animals, use a carrier oil — such as V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex — to dilute the essential oil before application. We suggest a 9:1 ratio of carrier oil to essential oil.
  • For medium-sized dogs dilute 4:1 carrier oil to essential oil.
  • If you’re using essential oils on medium-sized animals — like large dogs — dilute 3:1 carrier oil to essential oil.
Topical Use
Once your pets are used to essential oils, they’ll better handle topical application. Remember these tips as you experiment with using essential oils on your pets.

  • We recommend applying to the back for dogs and cats, being sure to rub your hands together until they are no longer shiny before rubbing the essential oil on the pet.
  • Use caution when using and applying essential oils to the bottoms of animal paw pads. Many animals sweat and rid their bodies of toxins through their paw pads. Contact your veterinarian for proper application practices.
  • For easier application in large or hard-to-reach areas, combine essential oils with V-6 or water in a spray bottle.

Creating a fitness plan

Everyone knows that regular exercise is good for you. The problem is finding the time or motivation to do it. Does this sound familiar? If you’re stuck in a fitness rut like so many others, maybe it’s time to create a fitness plan that will work for you.

The best way to start your fitness plan is to find an activity that you enjoy doing and then stick with it. If you hate running, don’t force yourself to run just because it’s exercise. It may be good for you, but it might not be right for you. There are plenty of other options to choose from out there, so find something that you’ll look forward to! Once you’ve nailed that “fun” factor, then it’s time to set goals.

Fitness goals — like any good goals — should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. In other words, don’t set a goal like “lose weight.” Dig down and get more specific. A more effective goal would be something like “lose 10 pounds in 3 months.”

Now that you have your goal, it’s time to put together your plan. Start by finding a time when you can exercise regularly. Just make sure you schedule it into your week like you would any other appointment. If you need help finding time, think about ways to fit in mini-workouts throughout the day. For example, you could do a 20-minute workout in the morning before work and a 30-minute workout in the evening after dinner.

Finally, if you’re tight on time, sometimes it’s easy to forget the basics, like warming up before working out. Remember to stretch and warm up before your workout routine, and then cool down afterward. A proper warmup helps prevent injuries, and a cooldown aids your muscles’ recovery.

Follow these tips, and you’ll be on your way to creating a fitness plan that works for you. Before you know it, you’ll be feeling fitter and healthier than ever.

Avoiding toxic chemicals in food and your home

We live in a modern era when there are so many chemicals in our food and homes that can be harmful to our health. To live a healthier lifestyle, reduce your exposure to these toxins. The key to this is finding suitable replacements for those products that come with long lists of harsh ingredients and chemicals.

One way to avoid toxic chemicals in our food is to eat organic. Organic food is labeled “organic” when it’s grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. You know NingXia Red must be very much related to the Ningxia Region in China just by its name! In 1993, when Founder of Young Living D. Gary Young was travelling around the world to seek natural secrets of health and vitality, he met Chinese scientist Dr. Chao, who introduced wolfberry (also known as goji berry), a berry found in China’s remote Ningxia region that Chinese had consumed for thousands of years for wellbeing. Due to the Region’s isolation, knowledge of this remarkable superfruit remained relatively hidden from Western culture. After extensive research on wolfberry, Gary became determined to make this superfruit available to the world, marking the birth of Young Living’s signature drink, NingXia Red.

 

Same as other YL products, NingXia Red is produced with the rigorous Seed to Seal quality standard – the land where wolfberries are planted must be non-contaminated and pass tests of pesticides, heavy metals and potential pollutants. After wolfberries are harvested, they will be cleaned and pureed to preserve nutrients from both the juice and pulp, then bottled after mixing with fruit extracts including blueberries and cherries, as well as citrus essential oils. The road to St. Maries

Young Living Founder D. Gary Young’s (1949–2018) ambitious spirit and passion for discovery and wellness took him to the distant corners of the world. The knowledge and determination he brought back from his travels inspired him to establish his first lavender farm, the St. Maries Lavender Farm and Distillery in Idaho in 1992, and then Young Living Essential Oils in 1994.

Gary struck out across the globe in 1985. His travel had one focus that became his life’s work: to uncover all he could about essential oils. He studied with prominent aromatherapists, perfumiers, and historians. From them and through his own research, he learned about the wellness potential of essential oils, as well as ancient and modern distillation methods. The history of essential oils fascinated him, especially how they were woven into the stories of ancient civilizations who, like Gary, prized their oils and found many uses for them. 

Gary also discovered a troubling disparity in essential oil quality. He determined that he should work only with oils of the highest potency and quality, which led to the creation of a set of standards that later became part of Young Living’s Seed to Seal® quality commitment.

St. Maries Lavender Farm and Distillery, established 1992

These standards drove Gary and his wife, Mary, to produce their own essential oils whose quality they could ensure. They established their first lavender farm in St. Maries, Idaho, in 1992—the first of what would become their global family of farms. Gary used lavender seeds he brought with him from Provence, France, and planted them on the 200 acres of this beautiful farm. Today St. Maries contributes to the production of Young Living’s essential oils and other aromatic plants.

Caring for the environment and community

The St. Maries farm, like all Young Living farms, places special priority on tending to the planet that gives us so much and the communities that build us up. Recently, the farm converted its firetube boiler from using diesel to propane, greatly reducing the farm’s emissions. The farm crew also planted 20,000 blue spruce seedlings to support oxygen replenishment. Local students participating in high school honors biology programs visit the farm to learn about its sustainability efforts, Seed to Seal quality guarantee, and equitable farming practices. The farm also sponsors local community events like the Summer Sunset Concert Series.

Essential oils are precious to the very end, but when the final drop makes its way out of the dropper, then what? If you’re an essential oil lover, chances are you’ve wondered what to do with the little amber bottles you have lying around. We’ve got 21 options to reuse those bottles to the last drop of oil and beyond!

YL Tip: Some of these ideas to reuse require a clean essential oil bottle. To clean your bottle, peel off the label as much as you can, remove the oil dropper and all parts of the cap, and place all the pieces in a bowl of warm water with half a capful of Thieves® Household Cleaner. Soak everything for 10 minutes, then use 1 drop of Lemon essential oil on a cotton ball to get rid of any sticky remains of the label.

1. Create your own DIY roll-on with your favorite essential oils and some V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex.

2. Infuse Epsom salt with the last few drops of oil in the bottle. Remove the lid and oil dropper from a mostly empty EO bottle. Put the bottle, dropper, and 1 cup of Epsom salt in a sealed container for at least 48 hours. Open it up and voilà: bath salts infused with a soothing aroma! Even better, you can add multiple bottles to a container of Epsom salt to get different infusions with stronger scents.

3. Make a centerpiece with one or two flowers in the bottles, turning them into little bud vases. Great way to reuse the bottles!

4. Jazz up your twinkly lights! Thoroughly clean your empty bottles, remove the oil dropper and all parts of the cap, and gently press the bottle over each bulb on a string of lights. These are a great additional to any holiday party.

5. Fill a bottle with your carrier oil of choice to have on the go.

6. Create a DIY face serum to add moisture to your skincare routine. Our top picks are GeraniumTea Tree, and Rosemary. Store your new serum in an empty essential oil bottle.

7. Reuse the bottles to hold your toiletries for travel. Things like hair oil, face serum, and baby powder fit easily in a little EO bottle; plus, they’ll free up that much-needed space in your carry-on.

8. Try your hand at a DIY custom blend with the last few drops of your favorite oils. You’ll love creating a unique aroma to use in your diffuser, and you can store your creation in an empty oil bottle.

9. Infuse a cotton ball with remaining oil and use it as a multipurpose deodorizer. Stuff a cotton ball in the bottle, put the lid back on, and leave it for three days. Take the cotton ball out—use tweezers if necessary—and place it anywhere that could benefit from a refreshing scent: inside stinky shoes, at the bottom of a trash can, in a gym bag, and any other place that needs an aromatic makeover.

10. Share your most-used oil with a friend by putting some of it in a clean, empty bottle.

11. Put together an essential oil travel kit by putting smaller amounts of the oils you use most in empty 5-ml bottles. Put the collection in a cosmetic bag so it’s ready to go when you are.

12. Take your empty bottles to a local glass recycler.

13. Refresh your drawers or closets by removing the lid of a nearly empty bottle and letting the aroma permeate the space. Make sure to position the bottle where it won’t tip—you wouldn’t want to spill anything on your favorite sweater!

14. Make an all-natural perfume or cologne. Store your signature scent in a clean, empty bottle.

15. Use the last of the oil to make a mattress refresher. Instead of cleaning out the bottle, fill it ¾ full with baking soda. Allow it to sit overnight for the baking soda to absorb the oil fully. Sprinkle the mixture over your mattress and let it sit for an hour; then vacuum up the baking soda and breathe in the freshness!

16. Make smelling salts for when you want a fresh fragrance around. Fill a clean, empty bottle with Epsom salt, add 4 drops of a refreshing scent—we love Peppermint—and shake well. Open the cap and inhale whenever you need a whiff of something fresh.

17. Dilute your go-to oils for use with kids.

18. Divide oils into two bottles. Keep the regular top on one bottle and add a roller top to the other, so you can easily use your favorite oil in multiple ways.

19. Freshen your breath with a DIY breath spray. Using the last 6 drops of your Vitality oils, fill the bottle to the top with distilled water and add a spray top.

20. Flavor your own sea salt with the last little bit of Vitality oil in the bottle. Wait until you can’t get any more drops out of the bottle, but it still has a strong aroma. Fill the bottle with plain sea salt, seal, and wait at least two days before using.

21. Add an additional essential oil fragrance to your Mirah Luminous Cleansing Oil by putting it into an empty bottle.

A. Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands! 

We all learn to wash our hands during kindergarten as hands are our most useful tool we use on a daily basis. However, do you still remember the correct way to wash them?
